What is shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu is an age-old Japanese massage therapy. Closely related to acupuncture, it stimulates the body’s vital energy channels.
The shiatsu therapist uses a number of techniques to encourage the natural flow of vital energy through your body, helping to reduce blockages and congestion. The gentle use of fingers, thumbs and palms will encourage you to relax and wind down, bringing you an enhanced sense of well-being.
What to expect
We recommend that you wear loose clothing such as jogging pants and T-shirt. You’ll be asked to lie down on a soft mat. Your therapist will apply pressure using his or her hands and fingers. During your session you will be encouraged to stretch and gently rotate your joints, so that your bodily energy flow is stimulated and any blockages dispersed. Your body’s own healing powers will be reinvigorated and your own natural balance restored. To finish you may be given advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle.
What it treats
Shiatsu massage can help alleviate many debilitating conditions such as aches and pains in the back, neck and shoulders. If you’ve a sprain or injury it can help speed recovery and healing. Anxiety and depression may also be reduced, and clients who are pregnant or suffering menstrual problems have reported significant benefits.
